Hi all,
It used to be easy, just type
Now I go there and it's a web 1.0 screen that looks like a third-grader made it and it tells me to go to the windows update icon in the All Programs menu. That's gone because I'd removed it along with all the bloatware icons that had come with the laptop.

I don't want "Automatic Updates", I just want to update when I want to. Can anyone tell me if there is some way to restore just that icon...not a full 'default' icons restore, just that one?
Thanks,
--Jim

The update is in the control panel - normally the last icon
you can drag out a shortcut if you need to

or in your start / search - type windows update :)

Go to C:\Windows\system32\wuapp.exe and create a new shortcut for your Desktop or put a shortcut in the following location.

Can you access these locations and do you have your Programs listed in there, most should be listed in the last two paths? Navigation to these locations might require you to show BOTH Hidden and System files via Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View.

C:\Users\usernameXXXX\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

The easy way would be to right-click on All Programs in the Start Menu and select Open.

sbcsu is right, except to get to that, you have to change view by in the control panel window to either large or small icons, because by default windows 7 uses the moronic category view, which is supposed to make it easier to use, but is really inefficient.

It's actually found in the very first link in Category View (System and Security) ;-) But I agree, I don't care for category view either.
