hi,
my friend has aquired a pc with win2000 on it, but on booting just before windows is to appear, it comes up to enter your password.
there doesnt seem to be any way we can get trough it,
it says press crtl alt del and then your suppoesed to enter your password.

cheers

This is standard for windows 2000. Any user logging into a Windows 2000 based PC needs to have a user ID and password. This is for security. If he was not given the password then try this typically:

username : Administrator
password : password

or leave the password blank and press return. If this does not work, then since it is a pc he just obtained, it would probably be easiest to erase the pc and load W2000 back on to it.

Try this link:
Make sure you read instructions carefully. The program won't fit on a floopy. The program comes zipped so you have to down load to a folder unzip and load the files to a floppy. Everyone makes this mistake. You won't be told the password but the password can be changed.

Good Luck

is it a windows password its looking for or is it a bios password "just before windows is to appear, it comes up to enter your password."

If the message appears when the computer just starts it may be the Bois password that you need. Just go into setup and change the password. I have Gateway computers and I press the F1 key to get in. It maybe under security in Bios Setup. When you get past this hurdle you might need the Windows 2000 password also to get in. You can use that little program I suggested earlier.

Good Luck

I think that maybe the bios password has been inputed in the past and forgotten. You should clear the CMOS by jumping it on the motherboard.

This involves openeing the case and moving a jumper on the motherboard, then after clearing moving the jumper back to its original position.

Follow the directions on clearing CMOS password in your manual for your motherboard.
