I have no previous experience or knowledge using Linux. Could someone please advice me on what books or journals to read, what websites to visit?

How can I install the Linux operating system on my computer which is current running Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional? Do I have to repartition and reformat my 40-gig hard drive?

A millions thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Hi,

To install linux, make sure you have unused/unpartition space in your hard disk. If no space/partition, I suggets you use partition magic to edit your win2000 partition.

You can dual boot with win2000 if you want. You can either use linux boot loader or win2000 boot loader. I recommend you use linux boot loader because when you install linux, it will automatically detect your existing OS (win200) and insert into boot loader config file. You can choose which OS you want to boot when you boot up your computer.

For first time linux user, I recommend you use redhat or mandrake. Read documentation from the internet. There are a lots of linux guide. Example:

Specific book for linux distro is available eg unleashed redhat.

let us know if you stuck with anything.

regards,
feroz
