Hey guys, how can I get rid of a dead O.S. startup chioce when I reboot my system? What happened was I have a computer running WinXP, I installed a second hard drive in my computer and installed WinXP to that drive. Then I took the second drive out and put it in another machine. I did this because I was having compatibility issues installing on the other machine. Anyway, now when I go to boot my original XP box, in the O.S. menu it asks which WinXP do you want to load? Well obviosly only one will boot. How can I get rid of the dead one? Thanks for the help.

Edit the boot.ini

Remove the rogue entry and save it.

You'll probably need to remove the read only attribute first

To remove an entry you can use several approaches:

1. Fastest way:
Start, Run, bootcfg /delete /ID2

2. Manually edit Boot.ini

. right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery - Settings, and use the boot.ini editor;

. or, Start, Run, msconfig. There is a boot.ini editor tab you can use;

3. Use bootcfg.exe

. Start, Run, cmd
bootcfg /rebuild
