how to get mysql started

Hi,

i tried "safe_mysqld &" and mysql deamon started then shut off immediately. i checked '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' and it is 0 (zero) byte.

i am a newbie and really appreciate some help to get my mysql going. it is a redhat linux 8.0 environment.
