So we finally took the plunge and are migrating to SQL 2005 from SQL 2000. We decided to go with an 64 bit server so we got Win 2003 64 bit and MS SQL 2005 Standard Edition, 64 bit. All good so far, installed everything on the server.

Now I need to install the client tools on my machine which is either XP Pro 32 bit, or Vista Business 32 bit, and this is where I'm stuck.

The DVDs that came with SQL 2005 64 bit run the install wizard and it won't let me install on either XP Pro or Vista Business workstations (both 32 bit).

I thought that the SQL Server Management Studio and other tools would install on 32 bit XP or Vista workstations . Am I incorrect or doing something incorrectly?

SSMS express is not the same as the full SSMS tool.

In order to get the 32bit tools you need to get a copy of the 32bit DVD. The 32bit tools are not included on the 64bit DVD. If you purchased via a volume license agreement then contact Microsoft or your reseller and request a 32bit media pack. If you didn't, then go and download the 32bit trial edition and install just the Managment Tools.

I thought that MS sent both DVD's when you purchase the product? That's what we got anyway.

With all due respect, Don Bot, I don't think we should rely on an accident happening. Let's kill him ourselves.

Ignorance of certain subjects is a great part of wisdom

They only send both media packs if you request them. If the OP purchased the retail pack then you only get one disk.
