How to get Apache to use /etc/passwd file

My question is this: I know that it is possible to get Apache to use the unix /etc/passwd file for user login, but not sure which mod you have to compile into kernel. Do you compile in the mod_auth_external or the mod_auth_system or some other one? What tips do you have once I get the correct module compiled in.
