How to get a list of SQL Server users

I have recently become an administrator of several server machines. However, when I remote into the servers, I don't see Enterprise Manager, I only see Administrative Functions.

What I want to be able to do is to get a list of the users and groups on each server. Is there a way, outside of Enterprise Manager, to get such a list, whether it's only displayed on my monitor or can be printed?

I tried getting into the Users / Groups area, but it doesn't show me all users, or all groups. I'm wanting to see the user's name, description and title.

Thanks in advance to those willing to help someone who is quite confused!

Here is an FAQ that Denny wrote. You will find it very helpful.

You can run the querries from Query Analyzer.

Also,
Check to see if built-in Admin is still a member of the sysadmin group on the SQL Server. If it is then any server admin can login to the sql server as 'sa'.

If your authentication type is mixed mode you might want to consider removing built-in admin.

ptherialt,

Thanks for your replies. On my side, it looks like although I was given remote desktop access to the servers in question, and given admin rights, no one installed SQL plus or Enterprise manager onto my machine! I've only been working for this outfit for 7 weeks, and am slowly finding out that I have to elucidate and enunciate every cotton-pickin thing I either want or need.

I appreciate your info and once I get the right tools installed, will try again.

SQL plus is an Oracle tool. Make sure you get the correct SQL server tools.

Good Luck, Post back when you get them.

Thanks! They have an interesting setup: 3 SAS Production Servers, three SAS Test Servers, all of which interface to both an SQL Server and an Oracle Server. A bit daunting initially, but I will keep digging.

Thanks for writing, and hopefully we'll talk again!

Hi, ptheriault....

Here s what my situation ends up looking like: The servers I was given so-called admin rights to are SQL Server boxes hosting SAS products. The person at my job who is over all our odd and sundry services has chosen not to give me Enterprise Manager, etc, but instead has said if I want user and group information that I'll have to use SAS' Management Console, which of course doesn't give me the same info as EM would.

Oh, well....I'll just have to let the bosses know not to come to me for info like that....hope the uber SQL Server master enjoys fielding those additional requests.

Thanks again!
