Hi,
I will just be straight with everyone right now. I know nothing. I really have very little, basic knowledge about computers. I live in a dormitory.
To use the internet I plug the cord into the ethernet thing and then straight into the computer. This gives me internet access and access to the dorm network. The network has multiple files I would like access to, such as movies, games, music, etc.
I have two computers in my room and only one plug for the ethernet. I purchased a router (netgear) and it works amazing! I have internet access for both computers. Only problem is, I seem to be on a private network now, and to access the dorm network I have to unplug the router from the ethernet and go back to one computer using the ethernet cord. Is there a way to access the dorm network without having to unplug/replug everything? Is there a way I can access the dorm network on both my computers?
I know that was really long, but I'm completely unable to do this on my own without help.
Thanks
Britt

Correct, switches extend networks and routers separate networks. The right thing to do would be to buy a cheap switch.

It would be possible to sign in to your router and tell it NOT to be a DHCP server, then never ever use the WAN port again and it will be a switch, but you really want to spend the $10.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
