How to FTP "from" NW5 server?

OK... I have FTP services running on a NW5 server, but now I have a need to ftp from the server to update a piece of software automatically (something like a virus update kind of thingy). Dilemma - can't seem to get the ftp within this software to work. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to check? How do I configure a NW5 server to connect (I am not running BorderManager nor any other proxy) outside my network (I do have a Wireless DSL connection that is doing PPPoE but I can FTP from Windoze and a coupla Redhat boxes without any strange or particular settings - I'm pulling out what's left of my hair and getting nowhere. TCPCON looks right, maybe... maybe not... there's only a single route in the routing table, shouldn't there be a setting for a gateway... there doesn't seem to be anything...)? Any help would be grateful!

Can you ping externally on the NW5 box by IP and DNS name?

Ash.

Yes, I can ping to the gateway (10.190.10.1), but not to the other side of the gate, there are no other subnets. Names resolve internally, not externally. I know something is not right, but what? Where do I define NAT'ing? I don't have enuf "new-school" Netware knowledge in this area - I've spent way too much time getting old Netware IPX and Microsoft IP to like each other and exacting CONTROL over desktops. I've done this kind of thing (TCP/IP Networking) in the MS world since the DOS days; and I have a Linux box acting as a router/firewall doing NAT at home; so I'm not exactly a greenhorn with this stuff - but I don't see where all this ties together on the Netware world. Information I find on Novell's support all seems to refer to BorderManager - but that's not what I'm looking for.

Thanks for your assistance... P-Dawg

What is the current route you have setup?

You need to add a default route (* or default) that is setup to your gateway.

Ash.

Here's the info in my route table on the Netware 5 server as seen within TCPCON:

Destination Next Hop Type Cost Interface
0.0.0.0 10.190.10.1 remote 1 2
10.190.10.0 10.190.10.2 direct 1 2

Still I can't ping beyond 10.190.10.1 (which is the router connecting to the 'net). I can ping the name of internal machines, so I'm able to resolve names; but, not to anything outside of the 10.190.10.x subnet. What next?

Afre you really exposing your network to the outside world and all of the 15 year old hackers who would gladly hack a network with no firewall or protection of any kind?? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Actually, there's another box in another subnet but I can't ping through the router to that other box. If I can get out, then I'll know what to do - but first I have to figure out how to get past first base. So... No, I'm not exposing myself... Besides, the wireless DSL provider has its own NAT rules where all in and out packets go through a series of non-routable 192.168.x.x subnets (they've a weird set of parameters - but it works - my sniffer/monitor on the inside only sees valid packets, unlike my home cable network which has at least a dozen or more attempts a day).

Ah... Got it... It suddenly is working. Perhaps it was working all along. Name resolution is the problem. When I ping IP addresses (not names), then I get replies. When I try pinging something like I get error messages telling me to check NETDB.NLM is loaded and whether I have properly configured SYS:\ETC\RESOLV.CFG (which doesn't exist on my box). So I guess the initial issue can be resolved by getting the IP address of the FTP site (which I did) and now the program in question is working and can perform scheduled downloads and automate itself (which is the whole idea all along - trying to get this office to be as close to zero admin as possible). Only one thing left to satisfy my curiosity - how do I get address resolution to work? (I'll spend a little time looking at Novell Support and other sites...)

Solved name resolution now, too!!!
1. LOAD INETCFG
2. Select 'Protocols'
3. Select 'TCP/IP'
4. Select 'DNS Resolver Configuration'
5. Enter Domain Name (if you have one,
else leave it blank) and at least one
DNS server.
6. Press 'ESC' and answer 'Save'
7. Exit INETCFG

Baddabing Baddabang - Names now resolve!

Now - next problem - new issue

Say I want to perform a task to automatically download
a set of files daily to a particular directory via FTP
as a CRON job. How would I do that???
