Hi all,

we've had wireless routers installed into the ceilings of our building - way before i came along. But no one documented the locations! they're still on but not connected to anything.

we're planning to re-use these routers/access points, but i can't find them!

Does anyone know of a device that will help track down the exact location? I know this is all a bit James Bond, but if anyone has any suggestions - i would be very grateful.

thanks

I use one of these devices to check that RF is radiating:-

It won't give you an exact location, but careful use of it will hopefully lead you to within a few feet of a WiFi signal. This is always assuming the routers are switched on... [wink]

I also use a device from the same company, except I have the WFS-2. Works great.

hmm... assuming that the wifi is turned on I would use a wardriving software like netstumbler .. it will track specific APs and show you strength (stronger the more close you are)...

With a "wifi detector"..if you have 3 aps in the same area you can't tell what one you are tracking.

if the wifi isn't on I would get a cable toner and poke your head up there and track it down.

I would suggest moving the antennas below the celing tile..for 2 reasons. #1 your clients will get better connections. #2 You'll always know where they are.

Good luck
