I need to find out who is using a certain computer name. We have switched a lot of machines and some of their user names have been reassigned. There is one machine that was working perfectly fine yesterday but this morning, she got the error message that the user name is already in use. That user name is supposed to be hers alone. She can log on with the same log in name and but not with the same computer name.HOw do i trace who else is using the same computer name? I already checked user manager for domains and she is the only one assigned the user name. Network neighboorhood does not show who is using the apparently unusable computer id. PLEASE HELP.

You should be able to log on as the same person on every computer in your company. If you have two computers with the same computer name the second one of the network won't get on.

(Why not give the duplicate one a new computer name that isn't duplicated?)

To trace the other one:

Note the name. Ping the name from any computer that works. This may resolve it into an IP address. Then check either WINS or DHCP or DNS or a combination to list the user name logged on.
Zel
zel@zelandakh.co.uk

Could you not just check in Server Manager?

If you look at your PDC/BDC, you can see a list of who is connected, and what computer name they are assigned.

Hope this helps.

Rik
