Dear all,
try to install Netware 6 in VMware environment.
I don't know how to setup hostname and DNS while installing Netware 6...
I am using comcast cable...and when I type ipconfig in DOS command, it shows:
Connection Specific DNS Suffix: arlngt04.va.comcast.net
ip: 68.XXX.XXX.XXX
Ethernet Adapter VMware Adapter VMnet1:
ip: 192.168.XXX.X
subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Ethernet Adapter VMware Adapter VMnet8:
ip: 192.168.XXX.X
subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Can someone help me how to find the hostname and domain name while setup "Name the Server" Netware 6 ?
Thanks a lot,
Sam

Hi there.
You really don't want to use the hostname & domain name from your ISP.... it's fine that your workstation uses those, but you need to use something different for your server.

To get this working, I would suggest the following:
1) Create your own hostname for the server. You can call it pretty much whatever you want to.
2) For the domain name, name it whatever you like (my-home.net or whatever). Of course, you will never be able to get to it from the outside world unless you have a registered domain name (see my comment below), but you'd be able to get to it locally. Additionally, in this setup, your web services will not all work properly.

If you want to get your network really rocking, do this:
1) Buy a cable router/firewall. This will enable you share your internet connection among several machines and will give you a much higher level of security. Additionally, you can set up port mappings for your web services and other uses.
2) Put NetWare on its own hardware. As long as the box meets the minimum requirements, especially memory, it'll be fine.
3) Obtain a free dynamic domain name (dyndns.org). This will enable you to get to your server & web services all the time, even after your ISP changes your IP address.
4) Do a fresh install of NetWare 6. If you read my HOW-TO in the FAQ section of this forum, you should be able to get the web services set up correctly.

If you ever need any help, just post here.

Good luck
