I installed a wireless USB NIC yesterday and ever since I have lost my audio on the PC. When I try to play music in Winamp, I get "Bad DirectSound Driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078."

So I checked Device Manager and sure enough it says I have no driver for the multimedia audio controller. It's a generic PC and I'm not sure of what driver I need, although I do not have a dedicated audio card(it's on the board). I ran Belarc and aida32 and all I can tell is my motherboard was made by Grantsdale and it may be an Intel 82801FB ICH6. I'm not really sure and I tried one set of drivers and it crashed Windows during installation. All Windows updates have been run. XP Pro SP 3.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the link, linney. I've not tried the PCI database before. I'll have to give it some tests sometime at home.

Bulldawg23,

Have you tried Windows Update to see if there's an updated driver being reported there? Sometimes you're better off with the Windows Update drivers... sometimes worse off. It's just a case by case basis. But more times than not, the Windows Update drivers are good. Just go to Windows Update, then select Custom, then see if there is a sound card driver listed under the hardware section.

If that doesn't work, you could also try this: Uninstall the sound card drivers from Device Manager. Reboot Windows. After the reboot, see if Windows reinstalling the device fixes your issue. It sounds weird, but perhaps if you have the wireless driver installed first, and THEN the sound driver, it'll clear your issue up.

Also, if that doesn't work, try uninstalling the wireless driver, and searching for another compatible driver for your wireless device. For instance, if the chipset and wireless card manufacturer are not 100% the same, then it's possible you used one, but the other will work. I've found this the case before with a PCI wireless card for a desktop, at least.
