The issue is once I apply the auto filter, it applies the filter icon to all the columns. I would like to use one cell for the filter, which is why I am trying to use the dropdown option to make it clean and simple.
I'm using 2007 (not sure if you are) but if you create a blank column before and after your 'desired' column, you can do the autofilter on that column and then delete the surrounding columns.
Yes, I would rather have one field to provide users to filter on. This makes things simple and clean for them. Most of the columns do not need filtering on.
Then you'll need to set up an Advanced Filter using your field as the criteria, and the criteria value as a Data > Validation -- LIST, as your dorp down.
Skip, Just traded in my old subtlety... for a NUANCE!
You can of course simply select the column you want to filter on and go Data>Filter and it will apply the filter to only that column,...

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.
