How to configure Apache so that it can manage the URL of a Web service ?

What is the required infrastructure ? Do I need a servlet engine to be associated with Apache or is Apache able to realize the call directly ?

Last question: is there any document giving an architecture overview of Apache ?

Fabien.

From this page you can link into pretty much every extension that is commonly available, supported and used for Apache. You can accomplish what you want in many many more ways then can be defined in this forum. You can use a variety of techniques from Java Servlets to Apache mod_perl to standard CGI.

Web Services is not magic, its just providing data over a web connection, the ways to accomplish this are nearly innumerable.
