I installed RH8.0 from scratch, after finishing installation, I cannot use telnet, ftp at all, how can I start this daemon to enable the service?

Both are started from xinetd.

cd /etc/xinetd.d/
make sure disable = no
vsftpd for ftp
telnet for telnet

then type "service xinetd reload"

Both are disabled by default.

thanks clonny2,now it works, however when I FTP to RH8.0 server from remote machine, I logged in as a user and can only see folder "/", cannot see any other files, do you know how I can configure it?

FTP:
More than likely, the user as whom you logged in is "jailed" to his own directory. That user's home directory is set to be the root ("/") of a virtual filesystem.

telnet:
Shut down the telnet daemon and never use it again. Telnet is a painfully insecure protocol in many ways.

Install and run ssh instead. Want the best answers? Ask the best questions: TANSTAAFL!
