Hello all

I have a nephew that has a non digital format video camera. He uses it to shot his buddies skateboarding. He now wants to edit these videos. Given that they are in non digital format what is the process and what software\hardware would work for this?

Hope this is the right forum for this type of question

Thanks

First you need to get the video footage into the PC, so you are going to need one of several things:
Depending on what the camera's connections are?
Firewire connection (possibly addon PCI card)
USB connection (preferably faster USB2) also poss addon PCI card
Vi Video IN (possibly an extra feature on a higher end graphics card, this feature is called ViVo (video in, video out)
Dedicated video editing card or external video editing box (these are available from makers like Pinnacle and Hauppage)
Once you have the means to imput this analodge signal you will then require an appropriate software package to edit the film footage ie Pinnacle studio 9/Unlead video studio etc
The software should give you useful read me files to get you started.

If it is an analogue camera then you may find that it'll be cheaper to replace it with a DV camcorder and get firewire for capture, rather than trying to buy and configure a decent analogue capture card. Most general VIVO cards are not really up to the job

Paparazi is right. If there's a USB2 port on your PC, there are analog-to-USB2 converters that include an MPEG2 hardware encoder. This will allow transferring your analog camara video cassettes to a digital format. Then Pinnacle Studio software is a good and cheap way to edit the footage. Studio's tutorial is excellent.
