Hi,

How is it best possible to edit files on the webserver, without an editor like Dreamweaver?

Basically, I'm not at work, only at my girlfriend's place and she hasn't got dreamweaver or anything. All i want to do is add the keywords to the webpages today for a client, without having to download a trial of dreamweaver or anything like that. Is a simple FTP program like SmartFTP ok, and then can i use it to edit the files in notepad and resave them back to the webserver?

Cheers,

Yup. Any FTP program will allow you do download the files, then you can edit them with something like notepad and re-upload again via FTP program. There's a very simple command-line based FTP program included in Windows.

would recommend something other than notepad as it doesn't give you line numbers!

Definitely agree with 1DMF on that.

I tend to use crimson editor which is a small download and highlights the code too.

I use notepad for all my development work -- I have other editors around but haven't really gotten to use them. Notepad has the ctrl-g which jumps to the line number -- almost as good :)

almost as good :)
- you said it. - lol , I did all my devel in notepad until just over a year ago when i bit the bullet and got a syntax aware, line number editor.

- called SourceEdit , I must admit, i'm glad i switched and it's free so musn't grumble :)

I do most of my developement in EditPlus. Line numbers, syntax aware, lots of other features. My favorite is the built-in FTP. Using that I can almost treat my ftp sites as if they were local. They show up in the browser pane, I can load files from ftp by double-clicking them, and save them back to ftp by hitting Ctrl-S, just like local files. It is a great feature.

Is edit plus free? , i use FileZilla for FTP, a mozilla program I do use all the time ;-) , is it worth me switching?

Textpad is a great development tool for HTML. You can download a free trial of the software. The only thing about using the free trial is you have to deal with a splash screen when you open the app...not a big deal.

EditPlus is not free, it is shareware, However, unless things have changed recently the trial version is not crippled in any way, it has only a nag box when you start it up. Registration is only $30.

I use Textpad, and wouldn't use another now.
Gives the option of displaying line numbers, colour-codes the tags which is useful if you mis-typed something.....

Also no practical limit to the file-size it can handle unlike Notepad.

Since I do a LOT of web-site maintenance, the ability to load my files from an ftp server and save them back again (and browse the directories) as if the ftp server were just another storage device attached to my computer is a godsend.

For other types of ftp tasks I just rely on my Windows Explorer replacement - PowerDesk Pro. It, too, has the ability to handle ftp sites almost the same as a network drive or any other storage device attached to my computer. I can browse, delete, create directories, drag and drop and all the other things I can do with a local storage device.

Why use a separate tool to handle ftp tasks when they can (and should, in my opinion) be integrated virtually seamlessly into the tools I already use?

I don't even have an ftp program installed on either of my computers (at work or at home).

I go with TextPad. If you have your ftp sites in your 'My Network Places' you can open files and save them directly from TextPad
