thats what i would think.

cover the cubes(images) with rectangles and change the visibilty of these rectangles to false probably using a setinterval

Yep, thats a mask with a motion tween, or several masks one right after the other (it looks like the later)... It appears to be just a image layer and then several of the square/mask layers. Doesn't look to terrible to figgure out.
