How to do RS232 recording

I im a studend in the IT and a have a project to record the CAN information using RS232.
How can i do that in Visual c++ ... i heared the there are some dll files that can be imported an use the functions to record the information.
What are the names of those dll ? and where could I find them and the documentation for them.
