How to display a long datatype variable in a message function

hi,
i am calling a function that returns one of the variables that is of long data type. The function compiles & runs with out error. I need to display the value of the long data type variables. i keep getting the error "expression is of wrong data type" when i compile the pl/sql code which is on a button click of an oracle developer 2000 ver 4.5 form. how do i do it? please assist!
