Is there a way to disable the profiles in Windows 2000? I don't want each user who uses the PC to have his own profile but like win98 to have just one profile.

cheers

Yes - just set up and use one user! If they're all using same profile, you'll not loose anything by having them all log on as same user. This is apart from Administrator user of course.

But I want to let them login with their own user accounts just like they did on win 98

Then why don't you want them to have their own profiles - that's the way 2k (and NT/XP) work - the profiles on win9x were an afterthought to allow some customisation - the ones in 2k are integral part of the operating system (needed for security & level of access, and users can secure their own profiles). Unless you're very short on disk space and very long on users (and if so, you need a new hard drive), what's the downside of users having profiles?
