We have SQL Server 7.0 installed on one system and I am reinstalling it on another test system due to problems with it. I want to make sure the sort order/character set is the same on both systems.

Can someone tell me the command to run to check the current server so that I can set them the same. I have search, but cannot find it. Thank you

OK, I ran sp_helpsort and I got the following:

Character set = 3, cp437
Code Page 437 (United States) character set.
Sort Order = 32, nocase_437
Case-insensitive dictionary sort order for use in the US. Uses the Code Page 437 character set.

I want to make sure the the test server I am currently installing is compatible with this; however, I am not sure what setting to choose.

What does character set = 3 refer to? I don't see anything like that, it comes use with the default of 1252.
Also, for the locale identifier what is used? Binary order or general unicode? My current server has Local ID =1033

If anyone can help with this, I would really appreciate it, I want to make sure that I set this up right.

Using the BOL, I entered Collations and found the sub-title Names.

In that section, I found this:

Sort Order 32 equates to:
SQL_Latin1_General_Cp437_CI_AS

I hope I typed that correctly, but you might want to use the BOL and double-check my work.

Unattended installation is a surefire way of setting up all your servers the same way. But since your test server is already installed, what you could do is to run the installation program again on that same server and make sure to select the custom options: those would allow you to choose which collation settings and sort order you want to use for your database; your datafiles will not be overwritten.
