Netbackup 3.4.. Is there some way to determine the media id/label if the tape itself has no label on it?

With the tape in the tape drive, run Device Monitor, after a brief time if it has a label it'll show up.

or, when the tape is in a drive run:
volmgr\bin\vmoprcmd - Run from the actual media server or if running remotely then it is:
volmgr\bin\vmoprcmd -h <media server>

what if no label shows up? can i assume it's either blank or not a netbackup tape (both possibilities in this case)?

Use bplabel to label the tape as you would want it to be - If there is a label that just is not showing up - You will be prompted after issuing the command.
