How to determine cover group? 2

We have an old Merlin Legend system.

Our main line, answered by the receptionist is 1880, however, for some reason our 1-800 number rings in on 1881. I will explain the behavior and hopefully someone can tell me how it's set up.

If I call 1881 it says cover on 1880 and 1880 rings.

I recently added a cordless phone for the receptionist on an analog port, 7132.

If I forward from 1880 to 7132 and then call 1880, 7132 will ring and 1880 says forward.

However, if 1880 is forwarded to 7132 and I call 1881, only 1880 rings.

In other words, I think 1880 is covering 1881... or perhaps 1881 is covering 1880, I don't know how it works.

So I want to be able to temporarily forward all incoming calls to either 1881 or 1880 to 7132.

My problem is that the serial port on our old computer is not working, so I have to do all of the configuring from the admin phone menu.. I can see that most of our phones are in cover group 30, which I believe is for the voice mail.
I've looked through all of the other cover groups by using the Inspect button but could not find any extensions in any other groups except for 30.

How could 1880 be covering 1881 if it's not in a cover group?

Thanks

It sounds like you are talking about extension numbers, and not lines. I assume that your receptionist's extension number is 1880. I also assume that 1881 is another extension located elsewhere. I would check and see what lines/trunks are assigned to 1880 vs. 1881. From what you describe, extension 1880 has an activated cover button for extension 1881 (just a programmed button - not a cover group. The easiest way to tell what is going on is to print out a report for extensions 1880, 1881. I assume you are using WinSPM through the admin port. If so, you can easily print the report to your computer as a file. You can look at the report to see what is programmed/assigned to each of those two phones, including any cover buttons. However, I still am not clear on what you want to change.

Hi Tom,

Yes, you are correct in your assumptions, thank you for replying so fast! Everything I mentioned are extension numbers. The receptionist extension is 1880. 1881 is located elsewhere but there is no phone plugged into that port. 7132 is analog. How can I set 7132 to cover 1881 and 1880?

I don't have WinSPM, is that something I can download for free or is there a charge for that?

Our phone programmer uses WinSPM when he comes with his laptop. He said if I could find WinSPM then I could use it with my laptop too if I plug into the admin port, but he couldn't find his installation CD. I used to be able to manage the phone system from old Unix box which is running our voicemail, I think it's audigy. But something happened to the cable or the port on the Unix box and now it can't connect anymore.

I handle most of the phone system tasks day to day and only call the programmer when I'm truly stumped.

Thanks again,

Nick

Even though 7132 is a single line analog cordless phone, in programming it is a multiline set. So add Primary Coverage "buttons" to it for 1880 and 1881. Then it will ring whenever either 1880 or 1881 rings.

Since you can't get in through SPM, go to the programming console phone, and:

Menu
System Program
Exit (or Start)
More (or Right Arrow button)
Central Tel Programming
7132
Enter

Press the 4th button from the bottom of the far left column (probably just above the SA buttons on your console phone)

If the display says "Blank", then dial *40-1880-Enter. If the display says something else, press another button until you see "blank"

Press the next button up from the one you just programmed. Dial *40-1881-Enter

Home (or Exit)

Bravo!! Thank you so much, I followed your excellent instructions and now the cordless phone rings whenever 1880 or 1881 are dialed. I really appreciate your help. Good karma to you!!

You can get a "free" copy of WinSPM from the Avaya.com website. Go to support, all documents, Legend system - anyone, go to software downloads, find WinSPM. First download the "update" patch for WinSPM Release 5 - it is really the full program. Then oinstall that download and go back to download and apply the successive WinSPM patches - all the way to R9. To connect to the admin port, you will need a 355AF adapter and a DB9 to DB25 pin adapter. It is easier to use an empty slot on an 012 or 016 module - and connect from your laptop's modem. WinSPM gives you those two choices for a "direct" connection - via Admin port on the processor or via modem.
