A couple of our remote facilities each have a Norstar Modular ICS. Each facility will need to be expanded, but I have never worked closely with these systems before. Is there an easy way to tell from a beginner perspective how many lines are available for use? I know one option is to purchase an additional device to provide, is it 12 more lines?

When you say expand, do you mean telephone extensions or outside telephone lines? What do you have in them currently? (Number of users and lines). The main cabinet is wired for 32 digital phones and can accommodate 8 outside analog lines OR 2 PRI's that would essentially give you 46 digital talk channels with (essentially) 300 DID numbers (or as many as you purchased from the carrier. With MICS software, you can add any combination of 16 port station modules or 12 line trunk modules. There is a max of 6 modules with MICS software. If the system has MICS XC software you can add an additional 4 or 6 modules (depending on the software level. The modules are connected to the main cabinet via a 6 port fiber expansion card that resides in the main cabinet. Asecond fiber card can be added with XC software. Hope this helps

"how many lines are available for use?"
It's 4 lines per card so count your cards and count the lines you actually have.
0X32 (MICS) holds 2 cards

"is it 12 more lines?"
12X0 module required if going beyond 8 lines.
12X0 holds 3 cards

You can get a 2 port or 6 port expansion card to add the modules.

Thanks all. Is there a way from one of the sets to determine how many lines (extensions) available/in use?

You can look in MAINTENANCE and check if the port is equipped with a phone.

Main cab is ports 101-132. 1st expansion is 301-316

Thanks allworxguy! Are ports 101-132 and 301-316 dedicated for station lines, or would these include trunk lines as well? I hope to get a hands on look at the system this coming week and want to be as prepared as possible.

The physical lines on the main cabinet would be ports 201-208. There is no way to tell if a line is present on any port without looking at cross connect and/or checking for dial tone.
