How to detect Java version?

Hello,
I would like to know how I can detect the Java Version which is installed on the client machine, with an applet. And what I would like to do is to get the applet to switch its own page to another page with another html page containing URLs of locations where the user will be able to download the latest Java version.

If you use Sun's Java Plugin along with their HTML Converter then this will ensure that the client has the lastest JRE for their browser.
