We have just replaced a Sequent system, and I would like to destroy the data on the disks. Can anyone help me with the best way to do this? I am fairly sure that the rm command is not thorough enough.

It all depends on how secure you want to be. Personally, I use a blowtorch and a vat of acid.

Large ball pein hammer. Much faster. No toxic fumes. Ed Fair
Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Let's say I want to keep these in working condition.

Well, in that case, find that /dev entry that reflects the entire disk, then do a [tt]dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/whatever[/tt] several times. Or use /dev/null for input, or anything that will generate random data.

Install a microsoft windows based os. this almost always destroys your data..........otherwise the only way to be absolutedly sure that your data is not recoverable is to overwrite it with something else as chapter11 suggests
