You should take a look at the microsoft generic XSL sheet that parses non-linked XML files for IE. It recursively generates the entire file.
You can download a zip file from this 4GuysFromRolla example that has a commented version of the XSL in it:
The file you want is the debugmode.xsl file. There is a lot of information in it, since they have to deal with every possible legal XML entity, but you will notice that they are primarilly recursing down into the elements in the document to build the nifty treeview.
