Hey guys, I think its a basic thing fo you but i am stuck at it.Our company has moved to a new location and we have an existing system. We used most of their existing features but having difficulties in the following. We have 8 analog lines and no digital lines so far. Merlin messaging is R1.

1. We want to create a dial by name directory after auto-attendent answers the call. We have merlin messaging R1. Can someone guide me step by step how to do it?

2. How to create a new extension?

3. How to restrict an extension from outside calling? We want to restrict one extension to call just internally.

Well, considering your other post, you may want to get rid of the MESG R1 anyway, since it won't do Ethernet stuff.

But, that being said, when you ADMIN the Mail Boxes, you assign a NAME.

That creates your DIAL BY NAME DIRECTORY.

Just be sure that you decide to do either FIRST or LAST names and when you create the Auto Attendant you tell your callers:

"To search for someone by thier FIRST or LAST (PICK ONE ONLY ! !) name dial STAR TWO."

So, to actually enter the names into the directory, log into the System Administrator's mailbox, then:

9 for Programming
2 for Extensions
Dial Extension Number and #
1 for Name or Directory
2 for Directory
1 to enter the name

Now, look at the dialpad on your phone. Press the button that contains the letter, then the position of the letter on that button. For "roomi", it's 7 for "PQRS", then 3 because R is the 3rd letter on the 7. 6 for "MNO" and 3 for the "O". 63 again, 61 for M, 43 for "I". You see the pattern (?)

Finally, press # to end (10 letters max). It is read back.
*# to approve, or 1 to re-enter.

*#*#*# to back up and enter another extension. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Its working like a champ. But I have one more issue. Our company want the directory by first name. Some of the first names have only characters and directoty has option to search by entering 4 letters only.

How should i enter the names with 3 letters (e.g Jim)

Just enter the 1st 4.

If you have something like 2 Bills, it will say:

For "BILL SMITH" press 1,

For "BILL JONES" press 2.

The "BILL....." part is the NAME THAT Bill recorded.
