I always remove the default swatches from my pallette in Illy CS. Is there a way that I can make it open with my choice of swatches already set up?

Thanks!

You can trash the colors in the default palette, except None, Registration, White, Black, add your colors and select Save Swatch Library from the Swatches window. Name it Default_CMYK and save. You should get a window asking if you want to replace the pre-existing Default_CMYK. Click Yes and the new labary will be default.

You can do the same for the default RGB library.

Make sure to name it properly. If you want you can trash the Default in the Illustrator folder first, make a new one and save it.

This is how I have ILL set up. My "default" only contains white, black, none, registration, cyan, magenta, yellow, red, green, blue.

One thing, look at the various libraries in the ILL folder to get their names. I'm on a mac and that's what I gave you for default. On a PC it might be somewhat different, if you have a PC

jmgalvin left out some important information that you need to know when trying to alter your startup files:

1. The files are located in the Adobe/Illustrator CS/Plugins folder; You must replace whichever one (RGB or CMYK) with the customized version;
2. The new default file won't be loaded until the next time you start Illustrator, so make sure to quit and re-start before expecting results;
3. On a more general note, any Illustrator file can be accessed as a custom swatch library, or symbol library, or brush library etcetera. That's all those libraries are, empty Illustrator docs with stuff in the palettes. Just go to any palette, and choose "Open Swatch Library" from the flyout and select "Other Library", and browse away.
