My application has a job that produces an email containing the job output and status ("Success" or "Fail") in an attached PDF file. Is there a way to create a rule which would scan the attachment and act on the contents?

Using only Rules, no.

However, you can create a rule to "run a script", where the script is an Outlook VBA procedure.

Why not put the application name and the status value (and whatever other key information generated) in the title? That way you can write a simple rule, no VBA necessary.

Unfortunately, the document contains the result of every application, not just mine, but that was my first thought.
