Hi,

I'm a newbie, I have a RH 6.1 CD and I need to create an installation disk (not a boot disk). How do I go about creating the installation disk from the CD?

Thanx

The steps are as follows:

1 insert blank floppy, and RH6.1 CD into a Win9X / DOS computer
2 run the foloowing DOS command:
d:\dosutils\rawrite -f d:\images\boot.img -d a:

This assumes that D: is the CD drive and A: is the floppy disk drive.

Once this is complete, the boot disk should be ready and can be used for installations...

Have fun B-)

Mandrake is a greate choice for a new user, especially version 7.1 or 7.2. I've also heard that Suse Linux is a good choice for those used to Windows.

Of course Linux can be a stand-alone OS. Nowadays you can usually just put the CD in, go into your computer's bios to make it boot from the CDROM, and then have a complete Linux install without ever having to touch DOS/Win. The real question is are you willing to take that big a plunge, or would you like to have the security of being able to switch to Windows when you need. The above post by 'theRat' simply mentions the most common way to get a boot floppy to install Linux if you don't want to boot directly from CDROM. Once your boot floppy is created you can (happily) wipe Windows completely. Or you can choose to dual-boot, where you have a choice between the two every time you start up.
