How to create a script that queries th registry

Hi,
Problem :To uninstall all the old versions of virusScan and install the latest version across the board.
Problem :Different versions installed , that must first be uninstalled or the machine dies if u install on top of.
How can I write the script that queries a particular reg entry. I am able to do it for one version at a time, but I want to create one script.
Any thoughts????
