Sorry for the basic email but I am new to illustrator and have not been able to do this. I draw a line and make it 4 or 5 point thick. I found where I can change the cap(end) of the line but I only was able to change from end cap to round cap. I would to have a pointed cap. What is the easiest way to make the end of my line end in a point? Thank you for your reply.

You could create a Pattern Brush to achieve this effect. Use trangles for the end-tiles, and a stroke width to fit exactly against those triangles. I added a quick drawing below to illustrate.

First, create the triangles (I made mine with a red fill and black stroke for visibility, you'd probably make them black fill, no stroke) and drag them onto the Swatches palette.

Next, create the "stroke", a rectangle that will serve to fill the space between the end triangles.

Now, select the rectangle, make new pattern brush, and assign the end tiles using the pattern swatches.

You may have to fiddle with the settings a bit, but that's the low down...
