How to creat a single index for the text in several word documents

From MS Word (XP) I learned how to creat an "index". BUT,I am editing a large book (almost 1500 pages), and I was forced to divide it into several documents (as MS Word becomes very slow in dealing with large files). So, how can I creat a single index for the text in these multiple documents.

The share permissions are set at everyone full control
this also happens as a domain admin on the admin shares ?
