How to copy datasets from one project to another

What is the correct way to copy a dataset from one project to another project ? I have tried to add and existing item but something doesn't seem to come over correctly. I would hate to re-create all the datasets I have for reports.

any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by this. A dataset is just an object in memory.
Can you clarify please?
