how to convert edi to xml

Hi friends

i am very new to edi. This seems a very basic question to all of you but please have patience.
how we will be converting edi to xml or else please tell me the flow how it will be converted from inbound to outbound. Atleast please provide
me some references here. the mapping tool we are using is sterling integrator. thanks in advance

In case you are using .NET, edifabric is an open source library that can convert to\from XML. You can read about it at www.edifabric.com
