Hi,
I use my labtop to connect with my UNIX box, which has a serial port 25 pins. My cable is 1 end converted to 9 pin, and I use this end to connect with my labtop, how do I make a connection between my labtop with the UNIX box?
I test with another UNIX box, and finally I get something looks like a login prompt displaying, but it is not ASCII, and I want to change it to a readable letters that I think I should change the set up of the Hyperterminal session, but no luck !!
You need to setup your terminal session.
Usually the terminal setup would be 9600 Baud 8 bits 1 stop bit and no parity. Most systems should work with your emulation set to vt100.
Well, the Hyperterminal of Window is "smart" enough to pick up what I want, I just need to select the type of terminal to use for, at first I understand the host is the computer that I want to connect, so I select VTxxxx kinds, but today, I just try to "think" the host means my labtop, and I select ASCII PC, and it works like a charm .... for other UNIX boxes, but the box that I want to connect is still having problem.
In fact, I have 2 boxes that I need to connect with, and call the Box A, with the first connection, I've gone, I through, so I close the connect, switch cable and connect with Box B, but no luck on this box, in fact, at least I get OK prompt with a message "Use dev <dev_pathname> to set up connection with your device". I don't know what to type at this device, but I try with command "device" only and I get another message "unknown Device", looks like even this command is not recongniable !!
Next, I then switch back to Box A to work on it because I know previously I get through, but until all the cable replug, I get the same OK prompt and messages like the other. I don't confuse and already double check that I connect with the right box, and even reset up a new Hyperterminal connection like the beginning, when it works, but still no luck.
I stump, don't know what's wrong ! and why it works for the first time, but it does not work after ?!
If you know the problem, and how to fix it, please let me know.
Thanks
I'm not pretty sure about the "smart" of hyperterminal... you should try with Mike's recommendation.
In 2nd place, if you got an "OK" prompt, may be hyperterminal is running good. In OK prompt you can issue a "boot" command or "reboot" in order to boot or reboot the server. OK prompt on SUN servers means a console "init 0", It means no OS running. For example, in OK prompt you can issue a "probe-scsi-all" in order to see the server's disk drives. There are more commands, you can get them from SUN web pages.
