Our Exchange server is in a domain and is working fine. I have one user who logs into his local computer instead of the domain and tries to connect to the Exchange server. The first time he opens Outlook XP it asks for his Exchange (AD) password. He types in the correct password and the username and domain are correct but it gives an error that your login information is incorrect. What happens is after one bad login attempt it locks his account. I unlock the account and then it will accept the same password we put in before that locked the account.
I'm pretty sure that it is because his computer is not authenticated into the domain. My domain security policy says three incorrect login attempts locks the account so I know it's not the security policy.

(Moving the computer into the domain is not an option, he needs to login to the same profile at home and at work. And he has a peer-to-peer network at home so.....)

Anybody have any ideas as to make the first attempt at a login work? Thanks.

Do other accounts work like this? Dan

Dan,

All of the other accounts connecting to the Exchange Server are logging into our domain so this problem is only an issue for this particular user.

Get a network trace with network monitor.

Does the login/password work if he uses POP3? Dan

Dan,

Our corporate email is IMAP so that's what we use for email. I am only using the Exchange server for calendar and contacts sharing. He is not using POP3 at all. How do I get a network trace with network monitor? Thanks.

I have a laptop which is a member of the domain and I login to the same profile wherever. Once the user logs into his machine once he will be able to login in to the same profile even if he is not connected to the domain at the time. It will just login in to his local profile. Try it out and see. You can have him login into the new profile and then logout disconnect the network cord and log back in again. Make him an administrator on his machine. That is providing it is 2000.

Thanks, The2ndOmen, but that will not work for us. He connects using an account on the local computer now because of the peer to peer network he's running at home. He already uses the same profile at both home and work, unfortunately the profile he's using is not a domain account. Thanks anyway. i wish it were that easy.
