How to connect Linux Server and Windows 98 2

Hi Folks,

I am totally new to newtworking and Linux (I am basically a code toad!).

I want to set up a Linux server and have a win98 client so I can test my enterprise Java applications.

1. What version of Linux do you suggest (there are so many!)
2. Once I have loaded Linux how do I actually phisically link the machines together?
3. Finally how do I use my Win98 dialup networking connection so I can download stuff from the internet onto my Linux box?

Lots of questions - If anybody can help me with any of them I would be really grateful!

I use RedHat 7.1, although Mandrake8 is good for those new to Linux as it is more GUI. I connect to my Windows98 box via a 5 port network hub and a NIC card in each box (of course). RedHat 7.1 comes with Samba (

http://www.samba.org)

which you can use to create shares between Windows and Linux. Once you have Samba working on the two machines you can drag and drop files from your windows box to your Linux box. Have a look at

You can certainly use a hub but the cheapest way to connect two PCs (only) is by using an RJ45 Cat5 cross-over cable. These are different to the ordinary straight-through 'patch' cables used to connect to hubs & switches - i.e. they have the send & receive wires crossed-over internally. You need an ethernet NIC (Network Interface Card) in each box of course, as said above.


With the cross-over cable you just connect one PCs NIC directly to the other.

Use Linux 7.1. Buy two network PCI card cost 20$ each. buy 5 port HUB cost not more then 30$.
use SAMBA on linux for file sharing (it is easy to setup).
Assign IP address to both of your system. anything say
10.10.1.2 for Linux netmast = 255.255.0.0 or 255.0.0.0
10.20.1.3 for 98. network = 10.10.0.0 or 10.0.0.0
do not use DNS or NIS at this point.
put both systems name in each others /etc/hosts file.

You will going to face some more problem. But togather we can solve it.
