I can't print with my toshiba laptop[ P1, 32MB RAM, Win 98]. My printer is Canon i250 USB. The driver is installed but showing error messege like' cannot detect correct port'when I try to proint.
There's no option of USP at Control panel>system>device manager>ports. only USB to parallel and LPTs and COMs. At the USB tab at device manager it shows the printer with a yellow'?' mark and says driver not found; but I recived a 'driver installed' messege and it shows at PRINTER option and there's no option to set the port to USB.When I connect the USB cable with the printer it automatically detects the printer. How can I solve this problem?

Check in Device Manager to see if the USB drivers are installed. Have you tried any other USB device on this computer?

Did you install the printer driver per the following Canon i250 instructions:

Connect the printer, but DO NOT TURN IT ON!

Turn on the computer.

If the 'Found New Hardware' wizard appears after startup, click 'Cancel'.

Close any open applications, and insert the 'Setup Software & User’s Guide' CD-ROM. The setup program should run automatically.

When the main menu appears, click 'Install'.

When the 'Printer Port' window appears, TURN THE PRINTER ON. The software will begin identifying the printer port being used.

When the 'Terminate Installation' window appears, click OK.

When the software menu appears, click 'Install', and follow the on-screen instructions.

When the 'Terminate Installation' window appears, click OK, and click Exit.

Click 'Yes' if you are prompted to restart your computer.

Thanks micker377 and Ski,
I installed the driver just as u described. But After I Turn on the printer when the'printer port' option appears it detects the printer and some pop ups like building driver information database........and i250 driver installed messege appears, but in the printer installation screen it shows' caution, the port was not detected..........' after a few minutes and no termination messege appears. At manual selection There's no option for USB, only USB to parallel, as I said before.
And micker377 I tried a USB joystick, that was installed properly. The 'canon i250' appears with a yellow '?' mark at device manager>USB

Make sure that 'Universal Serial Bus Controller' is listed in Device Manager(it should be the last item in the list), and that its 2 sub-listings(USB Root Hub and PCI to USB Universal Host Controller) do not have any problems.
If it's not listed, then make sure that it's enabled in BIOS.
If it's listed and either/both sub-listings have a black ! inside a yellow circle, then remove it/them from Dev. Mgr., click OK, restart the computer, and let Windows reload the drivers.
If either/both sub-listings have ax X inside a red circle, then double click on it/them, and make sure the box for 'Disable in this hardware profile' is unchecked, and the box for 'Exists in all hardware profiles' is checked.

It it's listed in Dev. Mgr. without any problems showing, then see if the online driver works better:

If nothing seems to work, then see if it installs on another system.
If not, then either the printer or its cable may be bad.
