I have a windows 2000 server with Symantec norton
antivirus (corporate edition 8.1) installed.

I had installed the symantec system center console and other
stuff related to anit virus server.

Sometimes it does the client rollout installation and sometimes it does not do.

Client computers does not get the latest virus definition
from the server. Client does not show up the latest updates date ( as what the server shows).

I had seen several forums and my guessing this happens if
your server is having 2 Network cards.

Yes my server has 2 netwrok cards with 2 different IP addresses.

Is this the real concern ?

Is there a way with which i can make the server + clients within this small business editon talk to only one IP address of the server ?

Correct me if i am wrong.

Maybe this will help?

If the Symantec AV Server is on a Windows 2000 computer with dual NICs, a possible solution, is to bind the NIC card's priority so the Symantec AV service will always get the specified IP Address. If binding the NIC's priority does not work, Symantec recommends running Symantec AV Server on a computer with a single NIC. The steps to bind the NIC are:

Right-click "Network Neighborhood," and then click Properties. It should bring up a window that has each connection to the LAN along with an icon to make a new connection.
At the top of the window, click Advanced. A drop-down menu appears.
Click "Advanced Settings" from the menu.
Click the "Adapters and Bindings" tab. You should see a window that has each network adapter listed, as well as each protocol that is bound to each adapter. This will vary, based upon which adapter is selected.
Select the Adapter that is used by Symantec AV, and then click the up arrow on the right side until it is at the top of the list.
Restart the server to re-enumerate the NIC.

I hope this helps you out. Post back if not.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

The Antivirus server is installed on windows 2000 server
on my network and this server is our domain controller,DHCP server and is the gateway for all the systems to get to the internet ( as we have some proxy server on this server)

1) EXTERNAL NIC ( with some external IP address)
66.x.x.x

2) INTERNAL NIC ( with some private IP address)
192.168.1.x

Now all the systems in my network are having the
IP address in this range 192.168.1.x

When i check the Adapter Bindings, this is how it is

INTERNAL
EXTERNAL

So INTERNAL is on the top.

I did not get this point what you have said in your
reply

Select the Adapter that is used by Symantec AV, and then click the up arrow on the right side until it is at the top of the list.

How will i know which particular adapter my Symantec AV is using ?

I don't have a W2K server to check it on, sorry. BUT, you might try (and this isn't that much fun)
Uninstall SAV
Disable the outside NIC so it's not seen by SAV
Reinstall SAV
Re-enable the NIC.

Perhaps this will force the SAV to bind to the NIC you want it to.

Hope this helps.

hey guys,

how do you setup/configure dual nics one for
the public network and one for private(like 192.168.x.x)
for running a centralized backup on a gig backbone.

thanks
