Hi

I'm about to configure DNS for the first time on a couple of UnixWare 7.1.3 servers, but I'm getting confused by reading through the man pages. I see there is a 'scoadmin dns' utility, but I don't know what sort of server/zone I need to install (eg caching, primary, etc etc). The servers are both on the same subnet. One is a file & print server running Samba and DHCP server eg server1.x.com 192.168.0.1. The other will be running SCO Office Mail Server eg server2.x.com 192.168.0.2. I have an ADSL router and modem configured to our ISP (they host our domain eg x.com) and the router/modem are configured to use the ISP's DNS servers. The internet connection is working from a test PC (with the default gateway set to the address of the router 192.168.0.246 and using the ISP's name servers).

I'd appreciate some pointers on how to proceed!

How big of an operation? What is your reason?

I do think that you will have a problem in that your router will probably limit you to expose only one server to the internet, so you need to check that out.

For a smaller outfit, all you really need is a primary server. The secondary is there to backup the primary.

In your domain records, you list your server 1st, and use your isp as secondary.
