As i have read in the dsl threads, others used an external dsl modem to enable internet acces to other computers via a router. I have an internal dsl modem that i installed. Can i still like that to a dsl router and hook up other computers so that they can use that computers dsl connection as well. i have tried before but i didnt not use a dsl router. I installed a nic card in the computer and my laptop and the main comuter with the dsl conenction was able to see each other in my network neighborhood. but the problem was that i wasnt able to obtain access ot the internet on my laptop. Does anyone know if i can pull this off with a dsl routher and if the answer is yes can anyone out there explain on how to do this?
thank you
JC

jceazl2,

You can not go the router path with an internal DSL modem. Your only real choices are to use a proxy server or to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). I am not very familiar with the mechanics since I've got a router but here's a link to a site that should help.

By the way, this can be done for free. You can pay for proxy servers, etc. but unless you plan on real heavy-duty use, I don't think you need to.
Hope that helps.

... You can also try Cable/DSL bridges, now available at CompUSA and elsewhere. These are just the bridges that convert the cable/dsl signal to ethernet. Internal dsl modems are an ISP convenience, not a customer convenience.

You will need a router, next, to provide for the proper authentication (for PPoE) and address translation (NAT). The PCs then sit on the side, needing only basic network setup. Ordinary mortals can do this.

Yours,
Mike
