Hello all,

I received some tremendous help from this forum in the past, and hopefully can again. I have a user's phone that is configured to answer multiple lines. All are configured correctly, with the exception of one - an outside direct inward dialing (DID) line. This one rings on the main softkey. I'd like to configure this line to ring on its own softkey, but I have NO idea how to do it. Could someone please walk me through the steps?

Thanks!

More details on phoneguy610's solution:

Log into programming: Terminals & Sets > [the set] > Line Access > Line Assignment > [the target line]. It should be currently set to "Ring only", which cause calls coming in on the target line to appear on an Intercom button (what you called "main softkey"). Change it to "Appear & Ring". This will create one button for the target line.

You also have the option to create more than one button for the same target line. You should increase the number of buttons if you expect more than one call at a time. To do so, press the Next button and change the number of appearances.

Thanks Multimedium - that definitely helps. I'll take a look at it and report back here.

phoneguy & Multimedium:

Thank you both - you gave just enough info for me to figure it out! Assigning the target line was fairly straightforward, but I didn't know which line was assigned to what ext or DID. So I did a little more research using this link and this link and was able to get my answer. I went into the phone config --> lines --> and then show line. Most of my lines were numbered with the DIDs. I located and verified these DIDs a while ago, but was unaware of target lines at that time.

At any rate, the initial target line that I wanted to assign to the set has a target line on a hunt group. I don't exactly know how to change that, so I found another unused DID in my network. I assigned that, assigned the 800# to it, and it's doing EXACTLY what I want.

Now - to complicate things...

1. How to I change the location of the incoming call indicator? Do I have the ability to set it to any one I choose, or is it just the next available?
2. Can I have inside calls (forwarded calls) appear on a separate key also, or will these ALWAYS be bound to the intercom button?

Thanks!

Internal calls directed to your extension always appear on Intercom buttons. It cannot be changed.

However, there is a way for forwarded calls to appear on other buttons. It is more complicated than changing a line assignment, but it can be done.

In order to be connected to a call, it has to appear on a button. (The only exception is a priority call, but let's forget about this one.) There are 5 different kinds of button that can represent a call:

[ol 1]
[li]A line button[/li]
[li]A target line button[/li]
[li]A hunt group button[/li]
[li]An Answer button[/li]
[li]An Intercom button[/li]
[/ol]

The same call can only appear on one button. Let's say you have a button for Line 001 and an Answer button for extension 234. If a call on Line 001 is transferred to extension 234, the call will appear on the line button, and not on the Answer button. The previous list is in order of priority. That is, a line button has priority over an Answer button.

So, if you don't want forwarded calls to appear on an Intercom button, you have to make them appear on another button. I can think of 3 possibilities:

1. Put the same lines and target lines on your phone as the ones that are on the forwarding phone. The lines and the target lines can be set to appear only on your phone. Call Forward will make your phone ring when the calls are forwarded.

2. Build a hunt group with your phone as a member. The hunt group must be set to appear and ring on your phone. The forwarding phone needs to forward its calls to the hunt group instead of forwarding them to your phone. Hunt groups allow only one appearance, though. If you need to handle more than one forwarded call at a time, you would need to build multiple hunt groups that overflow from one to another.

3. Build a phantom DN and put an Answer button for that DN on your phone. The forwarding phone needs to forward its calls to the phantom DN instead of forwarding them to your phone. Answer buttons allow only one appearance, too. If there is more than one forwarded call, the other forwarded calls will appear on Intercom buttons. Also, an Answer button cannot be moved: it always appears above the Intercom buttons.

Wow - this is great information! Thanks to you both. I think a phantom DM would be my best bet (considering my needs and usage.)

Though, this solution is very straightforward, it's also fairly complex, as I'm still quite green with this telco system. I have a feeling I'm just going to tell users that this is the way it is for now...
