Dear all,
we are about to order 30 3com switches for our factory and admin office:
1- datacenter: 1x4500G and 3x4200G
2-each floor of admin: 2x 2250plus ; 1x2924
3-factory has a fiber in loop connected to the datacenter
each cabinet : 1x2924 with transceiver; 1x2250+ and some 2024.

key traffic on the network: all the servers are in the datacenter
- outlook/exchange
- Erp
- SQL application
- network printer setup on 1 file & print server

How should we configure these switches? what tool can we use to manage them?

thanks for your advice

Are us using/ going to use VLAN's?
Is there VOIP telephony or planning to have for the future?
Do you use Video Conferencing?
Firewall's

If your going to plan using VLAN's first learn how they work otherwise keep your network flat.

greetzzz..Bas

Hi,

we don't have VLAN now and I am sure we'll go straight to Vlan setup (may be in the future to optimize).
We don't have VOIP but we should move with 1 or 2 year.

no videoconference and project is ongoing for a dedicate bandwidth for standalone videoconf facility.

thx,
Serge

keep in mind that if you use the 4500's as your Core switch, you cannot have more that 2 vlan interfaces. Also if you are using a 3com NBX, you cannot route multicast over layer3 with that switch. You may want to look at a 5500 as your core for scalability.
