hi everyone:

I just install a tape drive (4mm) on sco 5.2.2 sever.

and I also configured it, but when I do tape rew, it give me a error says tape device not find ( tape scsi is 3 and boot from scsi 0 -root)

can someone show me the steps how to configure the tape drive.
thanks

lin

mkdev tape. Remove your scsi device. regen and reboot. mkdev tape, remove the default scsi tape, regen, and reboot. mkdev tape, add your tape, regen, and reboot.
If you can, it would be better at ID2 as that is the default SCO address for tape.
There are some internal conflicts with a built in tape access, that is the reason fro clearing everything out first. Ed Fair

The tape device is likely to be /dev/rStp0

In which case you need to append the device to all 'tape' commands e.g.

tape rewind /dev/rStp0

i have the same problem but with a compaq proliant 3000 server with wangtek 5525ES tape drive.

How can i mount the dtape drive on a dual channel scsi controller.
I have it connected to scsi controller 1, scsi bus 2, ID 4

Please I need it badly thanks...

Masterkix

you don't "mount" tape drives. (at least not in sco)

you must do as Ed said, and reference you scsi host adapter by driver name (eg. cha , clad, alad, ... etc) and bus numbering starts at 0.

It will ask you if you want to make it your default tape device and if you say yes it will tell you the device names that you can access the drive by.

i have done what ed said but the BAckup utility on SCO unixware 5.05 can't recognize the tape device and it is loaded with a tape.

Do i have to do something else prior using the backup utility of the SCO unixware???

Masterkix,

"SCO unixware 5.05" is not a valid sco version. Which version of sco do you have?

If Openserver 5.0.5

tape status
- this will give you the status of the default tape device if nothing returns or an error, check what is listed in /etc/default/tape

try using cpio , dd, or tar to access the device directly.

can you provide some command line parameters to load and use the tape so I can use it on the BACK UP utility of the SCO OPENSERVER 5.05.
I'm trying to restore a filesystem on the same type of tape drive but the SCO can't see it on the back up utility.

please pardon me I'm just a beginner in UNIX. hope you understand, I don't have the manual for the SCO can you direct to which website cam I download the manual for the software or tutorial notes on the SCO.

I really appreciate your help thank you.

Will you clarify the "backup utility" you are using? There are 3 built in commands that can be considered utilities of that type, and 2 commercial utilities that are heavily used.
You might want to run " man tar" or "man cpio" or "man dd" to see what the built ins do.
I normally edit /etc/default/tar for the last line to be my tape device so I can use "tar cv /etc/default" as a short tape test writing, and after it is written a "tar tv" will give a file listing.
If the tape installed correctly all tape devices relating to the drive will be linked to /dev/rct0 so that will be the entry in /etc/default tar.
And you can print out the man pages which you can find with a command "find / -name tar -print" which will list several files of that name, you will want the one in the manual directory. "lp -dprintername /directory/subdirectory/tar" for starters. I'm rusty on 5.0.5 so paths or names may be screwed up. Happens when you work on hundreds of windows machines between SCO calls. Ed Fair

I'm trying to use the one that is included in th "SCOADMIN"

Why can't I restore the/dev/boot & /dev/root directories from the tape device??? the notice appears when I try to restore, it said cannot write, check credentials...

what is the correct sequence in restoring???

/dev/root
/dev/boot
/u
/u/informix

any sequence???

I have problem with a tape drive on SCO 5.05a. The default block size keeps reverting to 0, even though I've set it to 512 several times using setblk. Can anyone help?

Also had problem with DAT drive on sco 5.0.5. Even after remaking the device with mkdev tape, the device will not open in multi user mode, but works fine in single user?

I've never seen that type of behavior, but would suspect something really basic. What patches do you have installed? Ed Fair
