I have no idea how to do a color seperation, i do know there's two types, but i don't know how to save it, make it or anything else..........Please help! thanks

It all comes down to your print windows.
ie. File>seperation setup. Or File>Print, then seperation setup then read your manual. But make sure the colour angles are different ie. c=75, m=45, y=90 k=15 etc.
Or just just the combined file to the printer and they will seperate it for you

question..........So in the print window if I set the printer to the adobe post script file and set the color seperation mode to seperations host based, will this save to a file that i can burn and send to my printer?

If you are sending this to your printer, then forget it.
You don't need to do a seperation file. They can do that for you. just supply them with the Illustrator file, linked pictures and fonts.
It is their job to do seperations, they will set the screen angles etc etc.

So this is wierd...I need to print a banner, and the manual sez that the "Separation Setup" box is the place to make the appropriate printer settings. BUT, no matter what I do, the "Separation Setup" line under the "File" menu stays GRAYED-OUT...not only on my PC, but on the Mac at the next desk!

What the heck? How do I get the "Separation Setup" box to go active so that I can use its settings...?

Any advice will be much appreciated...

That doesn't work either; it's the same commands, inaccessible and grayed out in the same way...

I have an Epson 1270 and I had to purchase PostScript RIP software from Epson... about $100 when I got it. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in OS X and the last time I looked, they didn't have an upgrade. But I'm not sure if it's exactly the same for your model. You may be more lucky.
